Tasty Tuesday: Grandpa Monte's Hot Chocolate

November 25, 2014

There's nothing better on a cold day than cozying up to a nice cup of hot chocolate. This particular drink has been a fan favorite, for all seasons, my entire life. I mean, what's better than drinking chocolate?!

Just about anyone can open a packet of hot chocolate mix and dump it into some piping hot, microwaved water. It's not exactly rocket science. At a very young age I learned how to make it "the right way." Or so my Grandpa says.

Grandpa Monte's Hot Chocolate
2 cups milk (I have to use non fat)
6 scoops hot chocolate mix
cinnamon to taste
whipped cream
a candy cane

Instructions:

I start by adding one cup of non fat milk into a pot and set it to simmer. This should be a slow process. Have you ever tasted burnt milk? I really dont think you want to....

After about ten minutes of burner time, add scoops of your favorite hot chocolate mix and continue to stir regularly. By no means do you have to use 6 scoops. I just prefer a rich flavor. My favorite is Stephen's Candycane Hot Chocolate .
A little side note about myself, I am completely obsessed with candy canes. I buy them when they go on sale after Christmas and eat them all year long. (;

As the hot chocolate continues to warm, for about 5 more minutes, add your desired amount of cinnamon. Then stir stir stir!

After pouring it into my favorite holiday themed mug, and tossing a few marshmallows, I top it off with some whipped cream and more candy cane goodness. I told you I was obsessed....

This drink not only warms me up on a chilly day, it warms my heart. I'm so very fortunate to still have my Grandpa in my life. Last Saturday, we had some freezing rain and my grandparents thought it was a good idea to go to a pancake breakfast. Both of them slipped and fell in the parking lot upon arrival. My grandpa got pretty bagged up, but he's ok. I think his dignity is hurt the most. If you end your day in prayer, considered wishing him well.

  1. Oh my goodness, this just looks absolutely amazing. Hot cocoa is so good, especially when it's rich like how you've made it! Also, that mug is adorable Kiki! I'd have to say that my favorite holiday drink is probably a holiday coffee with spiced whipped cream and a dash of rum! It's pretty indulgent, but warms me up like nothing else!

  6. How cute is that, "the right way"!! I love Grandparents, they always have a good way about things. Hahah! If we're being honest, I've never made stove-top hot chocolate, but I can imagine how lush and cozy it must be. The owl mug is ADORABLE and perfect for some peppermint hot chocolate!
    ps; I don't have a holiday mug! I just realized! What's wrong with me!?!
